Madeira Electricity Museum Receives The New Book + Internacional Exhibition From United Photo Press

The book delivered at the Madeira Electricity Museum was the second volume of the UPP's 30th anniversary celebrations. This new 220-page book features 29 black and white projects by international UPP artists, including photography and painting.

“This new volume that we call“ United Photo Press 30 Years Of Creative Projects In Black & White ”, in addition to celebrating 30 years of the UPP, also intends to celebrate the ever present black and white photography in the lives of all of us throughout these decades , because it made perfect sense to have copies for consultation at the Museu da Electricidade, which is also an international reference for many international institutions, in addition to being a UPP partner in the international exhibitions that take place in Madeira ”. Refers the president of the UPP, Carlos Alves de Sousa.

The book delivered at the Madeira Electricity Museum has the participation of two photographers native to the island, João Sá e Sousa and Rod Costa, who exhibited their work together with members from other countries at the Museum, in the context of the 30 years of the UPP last October 2020.

The UPP highlights the project presented by the photographer João Sá e Sousa in the presentation at the exhibition and in the UPP book on "Podengo de Porto Santo" due to the need to register the breed, otherwise its destiny will be extinction, says the photographer who also is the breeder of these animals.

The book will be released live if pandemic conditions permit around the world, starting in April in the city of Setúbal in Portugal, going to Madeira Island, Brazil in Curitiba and Piauí, Russia in the city of Moscow, Germany in the city of Munich and others will be programmed according to the pace of the global pandemic that affects the entire world.

The Exhibition + Book "UNITED PHOTO PRESS | 30 YEARS OF CREATIVE PROJECTS IN BLACK AND WHITE" will be presented at Madeira Electricity Museum from 17 September to 15 October 2021 in the heart of the City of Funchal. The vernissage of the exhibition will be held on September, Friday 17 at 5pm. Second presentation of the documentary "Laboratory Greece" by UPP member filmmaker and photographer Jacopo Brogi, which portrays the genesis, decline and revenge of liberalism. Background music by UPP member’s Tan Ses, winner of Academia Music Awards in Los Angeles for Best Ambient/Instrumental Song, Alison Welles Jazz Quartet from New York.

Madeira Photography Museum - Atelier Vicente's: the History of the Portuguese Museum of 2020

The Madeira Photography Museum - Atelier Vicente's is the oldest photography studio in the country. He has remained in the same family for four generations and has been awarded the Museum of the Year 2020 Award.

The Madeira Photography Museum - Atelier Vicente’s brings together a vast collection of scenarios, cameras and a photographic archive with around 800,000 negatives, of which 400,000 are from the Vicentes collection, already cataloged, dated between 1870 and 1978.

Inaugurated in 1863, by Vicente Gomes da Silva, it remained active until 1978. In that year, the building that housed it, in the heart of Funchal, as well as the estate, with more than 1.5 million negatives, were acquired by the Government Regional of Madeira.

In 1863 the house opened again to the public. After three years, Vicente Gomes da Silva received the title of photographer of the Empress of Austria, Isabel of Bavaria - the legendary Sissi. In 1903, he received a new title - photographer of Casa Real Portuguesa.

The studio becomes a museum

It was in 1846 that Vicente Gomes da Silva started his activity as an engraver and, in 1856, he started in the art of photography, from his residence. In 1865, he moved to Rua da Carreira, where he built his photography studio in the gardens.

Vicente Gomes da Silva's work was valued and his studio became one of the best equipped of the 19th century. This photography museum had already spent four generations in the same family and, after a new closed period, opened to the public as a museum in 1982.

It is closed, this time for works, in 2014, with the rehabilitation of the building comprising 1.2 million euros for the executive, and 500 thousand euros, for a community contribution of 85%, in the restoration and safeguarding of the collection.

It reopened on July 29, 2020, with a temporary exhibition entitled "Treasures of Portuguese Photography of the 19th century", and maintains a permanent exhibition that represents several authors included in the collection, which includes the estate of practically all the great Madeiran houses of 19th and 20th century photographs.

Museum of the Year 2020

The Portuguese Association of Museology (APOM) highlighted the Madeira Photography Museum - Atelier Vicente's with the Museum of the Year 2020 Award.

The photography museum will now receive a glass trophy, designed by Fernando Quintas , painter and professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The ambition is for the museum to be a reference at the national level to project Madeira internationally in this area.

The ceremony was organized online, where the honors were presented with 32 awards for the previous year. Attributed to museums, projects, good practices, professionals and various activities developed in the sector, throughout the country.

APOM received 208 applications from institutions in Mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Regions, as well as from Portuguese exhibition projects abroad. In this edition, among the personalities in the area of ​​museology , the museologist Alda Costa and the archaeologist Cláudio Torres also distinguished themselves.

Outstanding unknown authors and works

In addition to maintaining the memory of the original studio, the photography museum of the Madeira archipelago, assumes itself as the only national museum entirely dedicated to photography, revealing Madeira's photographic heritage and many of its authors and works.

Among the predecessors to the Vicente's Photography Museum are the museum of the Bienal Art Foundation of Cerveira , in Viana do Castelo (2019), the Metalúrgica Duarte Ferreira Museum , in Tramagal (2018) and the Money Museum , in Lisbon (2017) ).

We present the 30 YEARS OF UNITED PHOTO PRESS CREATIVE ARTISTS international exhibition & creative artists book, that will inaugurate in October 2020 in Electricity Museum - Casa da Luz, in the heart of the city of Funchal in Madeira Islands.

The UNITED PHOTO PRESS is ready to restart !

After the international exhibition in January 2020 at Setúbal city and after the forced stop due to the global pandemic we still work too open our second international exhibition to continue commemorate the 30 years starting from October 01, 2020 at Funchal city. We can't wait to see you and your art works again and continue spread and sharing contemporary art all over the world from Electricity Museum on the beautiful Madeira Islands.

I begin by thanking our members throughout the world and the future members as well guests who participated in our international books, exhibitions of photography, painting, sculpture, installation, etc..., for your availability, imagination and interest in the United Photo Press over these 30 years. 

Our special thanks go to The American Institute of Arts and the University of Queensland in Australia for their recognition in our contribution to spread the contemporary art in the world. The work of today is the certainty of tomorrow, because we are all artistically together without distinction of race, color or sex, which stimulates our dream in inspiration of feeling new formulas, new techniques, new materials, so that we grow together ... 

Not all was easy in our 30 years of existence – of course we encountered and resolved difficulties, problems, deviations and setbacks. The largest obstacle and threat to the UPP's survival have been the tight budget/underfunding and continuously acquiring and retaining new members worldwide. Self-financing remains until now the biggest challenge to UPP as an international non-profit association.

Our publications and international exhibitions (ranging from Madeira Islands, Moscow, Tokyo, Munich and New York amongst other large cities) are intended to record both UPP's 30 years of struggle and inspiration in the process of spreading art construction. We hope that both serve as reflection material for society in general, art academies as well as art galleries worldwide.

After 30 years, the thematic scope is to continuously develop and diversify artistically. This will support to explain our longevity and the international interest: All generated by United Photo Press artists, books and exhibitions.

30 YEARS OF UNITED PHOTO PRESS CREATIVE ARTISTS is a international contemporary art fair that presents solo projects by international artists. The 30th anniversary will present for 30 days a forum for direct exchange of ideas and contacts between collectors, artists, photographers, designers and art professionals. The art fair features paintings, sculptures, photography art, installations, video art and live performance. 

The background music will be contributed by Austrian UPP member’s Tan Ses, winner of Academia Music Awards in Los Angeles for Best Ambient/Instrumental Song and American UPP member Alison Welles Jazz Quintet from New York. From Italy comes the first expected presentation  in Portugal of the documentary "Laboratory Greece" by UPP member filmmaker and photographer Jacopo Brogi, that portrays the genesis, decline and revenge of liberalism.
